OAKLAND, Calif. Air Jordan Discount . -- James Paxton pounded the strike zone to induce groundballs, and his defence dazzled behind him. The As remained 4 1/2 games back of the first-place Angels, who lost at Houston. Seattle is third in the AL wild-card standings. Oakland didnt seem too concerned afterward. "No matter what inning you score in, it was a one-run game. Were one swing of the bat away from winning it," Norris said. "They didnt score for seven innings either. Thats why you play all nine innings." The rubber game Wednesday afternoon between the division rivals and playoff contenders has the makings of quite a pitchers duel. In a matchup of 13-game winners, Seattle ace Felix Hernandez faces Jon Lester. Paxton allowed two runs and four hits in 7 2-3 innings. He improved to 8-1 with a 1.77 ERA in 12 career starts. "I was just going at them with my fastball. They werent making the adjustment and they were hitting groundballs and hitting it right at guys, so I just kept on pounding away," Paxton said. "They got themselves out." Sonny Gray (13- gave up six runs and seven hits in five innings. He is 1-5 in seven outings since his 5-0 July earned him the AL Pitcher of the Month award. Gray came in 4-0 with a 1.10 ERA in his first five starts against the Mariners. "I thought he pitched better than the numbers would suggest," manager Bob Melvin said. Kyle Seager hit a two-run homer that helped the Mariners build a 6-0 lead. A day after hitting a home run in his first at-bat since joining the As, Adam Dunn had an RBI single as a pinch-hitter in the eighth to put Oakland on the board. Craig Gentry added a two-run double for his third hit. Endy Chavez hit a two-run double in the fourth that slowly chopped through the middle of the infield. With second baseman Alberto Callaspo in shallow centre trying to make a play, shortstop Jed Lowrie was late moving toward the bag and Chavez had already begun sliding into second and no throw was made. Austin Jackson hit a two-run single in the third. Seager homered in the fifth, Grays final inning. "Hes definitely one of those guys you have your hands full with," Seager said. TRAINERS ROOM Mariners: Chris Young (12-7), chased Monday after getting just two outs in the shortest outing of his career, will be evaluated during throwing sessions by manager Lloyd McClendon between starts to determine whether theres anything wrong physically with the 35-year-old right-hander. His 151 innings are his most since 173 in 2007 with San Diego. "We actually talked yesterday. He assured me that he felt healthy, and I assured him that I would do what I thought was best for this club," McClendon said. "Im going to evaluate it in the next day or two and well make a decision. If I deem him 100 per cent healthy, yes, hell start. Thats bullpen sessions, long toss, the whole nine yards." Athletics: CF Coco Crisp received trigger-point injections to help relieve tightness and pain in his stiff neck. ... C John Jaso (concussion) hit batting practice on the field and RHP closer Sean Doolittle (strained right intercostal) played catch. UP NEXT Mariners: Hernandez (13-5, 2.23) looks to end a three-start winless stretch in which hes 0-2 and bounce back from a loss to the Nationals after surrendering a career-high four home runs. Athletics: Lester (13-9, 2.55) hasnt faced the Mariners this year after being acquired by the As at the trade deadline. He took an 11-4 loss at Seattle on July 8, 2013, with Boston. Fake Jordan . Bayern led second-place Leverkusen by 10 points with a game in hand, while Dortmund was another four points off the pace. Then he got back at the team that released him five days before the start of last season, hitting a tiebreaking double in the ninth inning of the first game at Fenway Park since Boston won the World Series last October. It was a night to remember in St. Paul. The Winnipeg Goldeyes set two franchise records, and the Saints — along with their fans — said goodbye to their 22-year home in fashion. The Goldeyes (61-35) were able to better the St. Paul Saints (48-47) by a score off 4-3 in front of a record crowd of 9,455 fans at Midway Stadium. The win was record setting 61st on the season for the Fish, bettering their 2011 mark of 60. The win also broke the Goldeyes record for road wins in a season, with 33. There wasnt an empty seat in the house, as the two teams took to the field for the final game ever at Midway Stadium. A game which was highlighted by some great baseball, but also by fun in-game contests, an on-field post game party, and an appearance by Saints part owner Bill Murray — who even greeted fans as they entered the park one last time. The Saints for the second night in a row, jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. After their lead-off batter Mitch Elliott got on base on a single, Willie Cabrera drove him in on a two-run homer. Saints starting pitcher Anthony Claggett had the Goldeyes number through the first third of the game. He set all nine batters down in order to remain perfect through three. In the fourth though, Tyler Kuhn wouldd get on base on a single and then would be driven in three batters later by Casey Haerther on a sac fly. Jordan China. The run pulled the Goldeyes within one of the home team. In the bottom of the same inning the Saints would reestablish their two run lead on a sac fly of their own. The score at the halfway point was 3-1 for St. Paul. Both teams would then remain quiet through the fifth and sixth innings, but in the seventh Josh Mazzola hit his second multi-run homer in as many nights. After Reggie Abercrombie and Donnie Webb got on base, Mazzola stepped to the plate and hit the three-run home run over the left-centre field fence that would put the Goldeyes up for the first time in the game. The eighth and ninth innings were highlighted by great pitching from both teams relievers. Including a team high 17th save for Chris Kissock, who struck out Elliott for the final out of the night. Goldeyes starter Nick Hernandez earned his league leading 12th win of the season. He was able to strikeout four and only gave up two earned runs over 6 2/3 innings of work. Claggett was charged with the loss despite his impressive start to the game. The Goldeyes return home tomorrow, and will open up their final series of the regular season tomorrow night at Shaw Park.
